This paper proposes a methodology to optimize the parameters of tuned mass dampers
(TMD’s) installed in a high-rise building subject to wind-induced vibration. The cost function is the
minimization of the maximum displacement at the top-floor of the building, while the design variables
are the spring stiffness and damping coefficients. The total mass of the TMD’s are assumed to be
between 2% to 10% of the total mass of the building. To carry out the proposed optimization, the
Search Group Algorithm (SGA) is employed. Several different scenarios are taken into account, such
as: (i) a single TMD (STMD) installed at the top, (ii) multiple TMD’s (MTMD) positioned at the top-
floor and also (iii) MTMD installed on different stories of the building. The effectiveness of the
proposed method to optimize the parameters of TMD’s in order to minimize the dynamic response of
the building is shown in each case. At the end of this paper, a comparison among the results is carried
out.
