Resumo

This work presents a study related to the optimization of reinforced concrete beams and
steel beams. Initially, formulations to optimize reinforced concrete beams of rectangular section and
“I” welded steel beams were developed, aiming to minimize the total cost. For both structural
materials, cross-sectional dimensions were considered as discrete design variables. To the constraints,
related to serviceability and ultimate limit states, Brazilian Standards NBR6118/2014 and
NBR8800/2008 were adopted, respectively to reinforced concrete and to steel beams. The developed
formulations were computationally implemented by the usage of Simulated Annealing optimization
method. From a parametric study considering different spans and loads, simply supported beams were
analyzed in order to obtain the optimized costs and their corresponding cross-sectional dimensions.
The comparison of concrete and steel beams aimed to clearly identify the advantages of each structural
material to a given span in terms of cost, height and self-weight.
