Due to the increasing competition, associated to growing concerns about the environmental impacts
caused by construction, it is important the rational use of structural materials. In this sense, optimization techniques
can be seen as valuable tools to improve the design efficiency. This work presents the application of optimization
to design of castellated steel beams, aiming the weight minimization. To achieve this goal, both the dimensions of
the profile and of the holes were taken as the design variables. The constraints, related to ultimate and limit states,
were considered according to Brazilian standards. The optimization was performed through the usage of Simulated
Annealing Method, a meta-heuristic developed upon the analogy of the annealing of metals. Based on the
formulation implementation, some structures were analyzed in order to verify the efficiency of the proposed
procedure. In addition, welded and laminated optimized steel beams were compared, aiming to ide notify the
relative economy obtained.
