In this work, the performance of a nonlinear tuned mass damper is evaluated when applied to a nonlinear
Duffing equation with both softening and hardening behavior. For this, a damped Duffing nonlinear oscillator is
considered and subjected to a harmonic load, first the optimal linear control parameters are obtained and these
parameters are used to evaluate its performance on the nonlinear vibration regime. The quality of the nonlinear
tuned mass damper is observed on the resonance curves, basin of attraction, time responses, phase planes and
Poincaré sections.
