Resumo

The Modal Curvature Difference (MCD) method is a damage indicator described in the literature for detecting damage in beams. It uses the absolute difference in mode shape curvature under healthy and damaged conditions. It is a widely used method, mainly due to its simplicity in practical applications. However, in some situations, the configuration of the displacement mode shape of the ith mode of the healthy structure, compared to the damaged structure, exhibits mirroring. In these cases, the damage detection algorithm is not an effective indicator. In this context, this study proposes modifying the method to create a new method called Modified Modal Curvature Difference (MMCD). The modified (MMCD) and traditional (MCD) methods were applied numerically to a fixed-end steel beam (created using commercial finite element software) for multiple damage scenarios. The results demonstrated that the modified method (MMCD) outperforms the traditional method (MCD).
