Abstract

Many engineering materials exhibit anisotropic mechanical behaviour. The use of advanced and engineered materials to replace conventional engineering materials has triggered the requirement of many complex anisotropic mechanical models. Despite the elastic response of structures composed of anisotropic materials be studied since the last century, its failure analysis remains a significant challenge. In this study, the Extended Lumped Damage Mechanics (XLDM) approach addresses the material nonlinear behaviour of anisotropic materials. The XLDM combines fundamental concepts of fracture and damage mechanics and has proven effective in analysing structural failures. Besides, it has been implemented within a position-based finite element framework, which enables the failure analysis accounting for geometric nonlinearities.
